How Many Days Do You Really Need in Madeira?

If you're planning a trip to Madeira, one of the first questions you'll probably ask is: how many days do you actually need?

The short answer is that it depends on how you want to experience the island.

You can see some of Madeira's highlights in three days, experience a much more complete version of the island in five days, or spend a week or longer exploring at a slower pace. But Madeira is the kind of destination where the more time you have, the more you discover.

The island may look small on a map, but its dramatic mountains, winding roads, tiny villages, levada walks, viewpoints and constantly changing microclimates mean that there is far more to see than you might expect.

If you're wondering whether you should spend 3, 5 or 7 days in Madeira, here's our guide to making the most of your time.

Is 3 Days Enough in Madeira?

Yes - you can have an incredible three days in Madeira.

However, you won't see everything. With just three days, the best approach is to avoid trying to tick every attraction off a list and instead choose a few experiences that give you a real feel for the island.

A three-day trip could include:

  • Exploring Funchal and its historic streets

  • Seeing the dramatic mountain scenery of Madeira

  • Visiting some of the island's most spectacular viewpoints

  • Experiencing a levada walk or shorter hike

  • Exploring part of the north or west coast

  • Trying traditional Madeiran food and wine

If you're only visiting for three days, planning your time carefully makes a big difference. The island's roads can be slow and winding, and weather conditions can vary significantly from one part of Madeira to another.

This is where having local knowledge can help. Rather than spending hours planning routes and trying to work out which places can realistically be combined in one day, you can focus on enjoying the experience.

Our advice for 3 days in Madeira

Choose one or two key experiences each day rather than attempting to see the whole island.

If you want to experience as much as possible in a short time, a private tour can also help you make better use of your time. Your itinerary can be adapted around your interests, the weather and the places you most want to see.

Is 5 Days Enough in Madeira?

For many visitors, five days is the sweet spot.

With five days, you have enough time to experience a good mix of Madeira's landscapes and culture without feeling like you're constantly rushing from one place to the next.

A five-day Madeira itinerary could include:

Day 1: Explore Funchal

Start your trip by getting to know Madeira's capital.

Explore the old town, wander through the colourful streets, visit the Mercado dos Lavradores and enjoy a traditional meal. You could also take the cable car towards Monte for panoramic views over Funchal.

Day 2: Discover the Mountains

Head into the mountains and experience the landscapes that make Madeira so unique.

Depending on the weather and your fitness level, this could be a day for hiking, mountain viewpoints or simply exploring some of the island's spectacular scenery.

Day 3: Explore the West

The west of Madeira is known for dramatic coastal scenery, high cliffs and some of the island's most impressive viewpoints.

Take your time exploring the coastline and discover places such as the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, Cabo Girão and the natural pools around Porto Moniz.

Day 4: Experience a Levada Walk

Madeira's levadas are one of the island's defining features.

These historic irrigation channels wind through forests and mountains, creating some of the most beautiful walking routes on the island.

There are walks for different levels of fitness, from relatively gentle routes to more challenging mountain hikes.

Day 5: Go Beyond the Tourist Trail

Use your final day to see a different side of Madeira.

Explore smaller villages, discover local food and wine, visit quieter corners of the island or let a local guide create a day around the things you personally enjoy.

This is often the day that visitors remember most.

Is 7 Days Enough in Madeira?

If you have a full week, you're in a great position.

Seven days gives you the opportunity to explore Madeira at a much more relaxed pace, allowing time for both the famous sights and the places that are easier to miss.

With a week, you can combine:

  • Hiking

  • Mountain scenery

  • Funchal

  • Coastal villages

  • Levada walks

  • Local food

  • Madeira wine

  • Sunrise or sunset experiences

  • Natural swimming pools

  • Scenic viewpoints

  • Quieter, less-visited parts of the island

You also have something incredibly valuable: flexibility.

Madeira has its own microclimates, so the weather can be very different across the island on the same day. If the mountains are covered in cloud, the coast might be bright and sunny. If your planned hike isn't suitable because of the weather, you have another day to try it.

Having seven days means you don't have to build your entire holiday around a rigid itinerary.

You can leave room for spontaneity.

How Long Do You Need to See the Whole Island?

The truth is, you could spend weeks exploring Madeira and still find something new.

If your idea of seeing the island means visiting the main highlights, then five to seven days can give you a fantastic introduction.

But if you want to:

  • Take several hikes

  • Explore both the north and south

  • Visit the east and west

  • Discover smaller villages

  • Spend time in Funchal

  • Experience Madeira's food and wine

  • Find quieter places away from the main tourist routes

Then we'd recommend staying for at least a week.

The biggest mistake visitors make is thinking that Madeira is small enough to see everything in a couple of days.

Distance isn't the only factor.

Mountain roads are often narrow and winding, journeys can take longer than expected, and stopping to enjoy the views is part of the experience.

The best Madeira itinerary isn't necessarily the one that fits the most places into the fewest days.

It's the one that gives you enough time to actually enjoy where you are.

Should You Hire a Car in Madeira?

A hire car gives you a lot of freedom, and for confident drivers it's a great way to explore independently.

However, driving in Madeira isn't for everyone.

The island is mountainous, and some roads are steep, narrow and winding. You may also find yourself spending more time navigating than enjoying the scenery.

If you don't want to drive, you don't have to miss out on exploring the island. Private tours can be a great alternative, particularly if you have limited time or want to visit places that are difficult to reach by public transport.

You can spend the day with a local guide, travel at your own pace and adapt your plans depending on the weather and what you want to see.

What's the Best Way to See Madeira?

There isn't one perfect way to explore Madeira.

It depends on the kind of traveller you are.

  • If you love independence: hiring a car and creating your own itinerary could be ideal.

  • If you love hiking: you may want to focus your trip around Madeira's trails and levadas.

  • If you have limited time: a private tour can help you see more without spending hours planning your route.

  • If you want to discover local places: travelling with someone who knows the island can take you beyond the obvious tourist stops.

  • If you want a mixture of everything: five to seven days gives you enough time to combine nature, adventure, food and culture.

Our Advice? Don't Try to See Everything!

Madeira isn't a destination you need to "complete".

The best memories often come from the unexpected stop on a mountain road, the tiny village you weren't planning to visit, the restaurant recommended by a local or the viewpoint you discover when the clouds suddenly clear.
