Frequently Asked Questions: Private Tours in Madeira
Prices are per vehicle, not per person, with two tiers: 1-2 guests and 3-6 guests. Current prices run from €250 to €430 per vehicle depending on the tour. For example, our full-day jeep tour is €300 for 1-2 guests and €345 for 3-6, which works out at about €115 each for a group of three. See each tour page for current prices.
With a private tour you get your own guide, your own vehicle and transport, and no waiting for other people. The price covers hotel pickup and drop-off, the guide and the transport, and because you’re split across the vehicle, the cost per person drops as your group grows. You also set the pace and shape the route around what you want to see.
Included: pickup and drop-off from your hotel, accommodation or the cruise port, a private guide who is trained in first aid and qualified, and private transport/private jeep. Our hiking tours include Portuguese insurance, and our sunrise tour includes coffee, tea and a local snacks, trail entry tickets. Not included: meals and drinks (a picnic can be added for €15 per person), hiking gear and extra clothing. On the Ponta de São Lourenço hike, returning by boat is an additional €17 per person.
Send us your preferred date, number of guests and pickup location using the enquiry form on any tour page, or contact us by email at tours@intothewildmadeira.com or WhatsApp on +351 934 108 536. We confirm availability, then you can pay by PayPal, bank transfer or cash on the day. For larger bookings we may ask for a deposit.
Madeira has many microclimates, so if one area is rainy we can often find sunshine elsewhere. We monitor the forecast and live mountain conditions, and if a tour isn’t safe we contact you as early as possible and offer a new date or a different route. If neither works for you, you get a full refund.
Madeira’s tours are safe when you go with an experienced guide who respects the conditions. Our guides are qualified mountain guides trained in first aid, and we operate under licence RNAAT 849/2024. Your guide checks the weather and trail conditions on the day, and can change the route or start time to suit them. On the trail you set the pace, and we stop whenever you want. We ask you to tell us in writing before your tour about any medical condition that needs attention or medication, so we can plan around it.
Each private jeep takes up to 6 guests. For larger groups we arrange multiple vehicles or a private minibus or coach, so a family reunion or club can stay together. For groups of 10 or more, a 20% deposit secures the booking, with the balance due one week before the tour.
In peak season we recommend booking at least a week ahead. From November to March you can leave it longer, but because we’re a small company, availability fills quickly. If you’re booking at short notice, message us and we’ll tell you straight away whether we can fit you in.
You get a full refund if you cancel at least 48 hours before a half-day or one-day tour, or 72 hours before a multi-day tour. Later cancellations and no-shows aren’t refunded. You can reschedule for free within those deadlines, subject to availability. Cancellations are made by email to tours@intothewildmadeira.com, and approved refunds reach your original payment method within 14 days.
Into The Wild Madeira is a small, locally run private tour company based in Ribeira Brava. Jimmy guides the tours and Izzie looks after bookings, admin and communication, so you always deal with the same small team.
Yes. Into The Wild Madeira operates under Madeira Tourism Licence RNAAT 849/2024. We are also listed with the Electronic Complaints Book (Livro de Reclamações Eletrónico), linked in our site footer.
We focus on private, off-the-beaten-path experiences that aren’t copy and paste. Instead of a fixed route, you see the real Madeira, with local stories, history and what it was like to grow up here. Every tour is just you, your group and your guide.
You can read independent guest reviews on our Tripadvisor and Google profiles. We’d rather you read what guests wrote than take our word for it.
We’re based in Ribeira Brava, a coastal town on Madeira’s south-west coast, and we know the island’s central and western areas well. But you don’t have to be nearby. We offer tours and pickups from anywhere on the island, including Funchal and the cruise port.
A full day of about 7-8 hours in a private 4x4 or minivan with your local guide, starting with pickup from your accommodation. A typical route covers Câmara de Lobos, the Cabo Girão skywalk, Ribeira Brava, São Vicente and the Fanal forest, with optional stops like the natural pools at Porto Moniz. The day is yours to shape, with viewpoints, short walks, photo stops and local stories along the way. You don’t need any fitness level, because our drivers handle the mountain roads.
Levadas are historic irrigation channels cut into the mountainsides, with walking paths beside them. They are some of the best ways to see Madeira’s laurel forests and waterfalls. We guide any levada route you choose, including Levada das 25 Fontes and Levada do Caldeirão Verde, and we also offer coastal hikes like Ponta de São Lourenço, the PR1 Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike, multi-day trekking, the GR1 island crossing and combined walks. If you’re not sure which suits you, tell us your experience and we’ll recommend a route.
